On January 29, 2020, Karaganda industrial university hosted the webinar “Introduction to QS Rankings”, organized by the head of the quality management System Department Olga klimentyevna Pak.
As you know, the rating of the best higher education institutions depends directly on the main indicators and achievements of the University in the field of science, education and competitiveness, which is calculated using the method of the British consulting company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) – which is one of the most influential global rankings of the best universities of world importance.
QS World University Rankings was developed in 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds in conjunction with the British publication Times Higher Education (THE).
This rating evaluates universities in the following key positions: activity and quality of research activities, employers ‘ opinions and career potential, teaching and internationalization. These indicators cover the key strategic missions of universities of global importance, for which they are responsible to the participants of the process: the academic community, employers, students and their parents. Every year, the study evaluates more than 2.5 thousand higher education institutions around the world. According to its results, a ranking of the 500 best universities in the world is compiled, as well as university rankings for individual disciplines.
The level of university achievement is assessed based on a combination of statistical analysis of educational institutions, audited data (including information on the citation index from the Scopus database, the world’s largest bibliometric database of scientific publications), as well as data from a global expert survey of representatives of the international academic community and employers who Express their opinions about universities. The following are quantitative and qualitative indicators for evaluating the performance of universities.
During the webinar, regional Director of QS World University Rankings for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Zoya Zaitseva told the event participants about the methodology for selecting universities in the QS-rating and the position of Kazakh universities in it.
Zoya Zaitseva focused her attention on how to increase the University’s awareness, as well as on what is strictly forbidden to do in order not to lose her position in the QS-rating.
At the end of 2019, our University also submitted an application to participate in the QS-rating.
As Olga Klimentyevna noted: “Karaganda industrial university has a lot of serious work to do to improve its scientometric indicators, internationalization, and recognition among the international academic community. But this process is actively moving forward.”
