About the Department

The history of one of the first graduating departments – “Metallurgy of iron and steel” begins in 1963 (the year of foundation of the high school technical institute). The organization of the department of the metallurgical profile was caused by the need to train qualified workers for the maintenance of the blast-furnace and steel-smelting production at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant. The first head of the department was the acting dean of the metallurgical faculty Ayukov A.S. (1963-1964), then Nam B.P. was assigned to the head of the post.

A little later, the department was renamed the department “Metallurgy of ferrous metals”, which since 1966 headed Kapustin I.V., and in 1972 it was divided into two departments: “Iron metallurgy” and “Steel metallurgy”. The first was headed by Ph.D. Artykbaev O.A. (1972-1983), in 1983-1990. – Doctor of Technical Sciences, Tleugabulov S.M., and the second – Umarov K. (1981-1988). In 1990, these departments were again merged into one department “Metallurgy of iron and steel” under the leadership of S. Tleugabulov. (1990-1993, 1996-2001) and Nikitin G.M. (1993-1996)

In 2001, the department “Metallurgy of iron and steel” was renamed into the department “Metallurgy of ferrous and non-ferrous metals”, which until 2003 was headed by SM Tleugabulov, from 2003-2008. – Torgovec AK. In September 2008, the department was renamed again and became called Metallurgy Department.

Even earlier, in 1968, the department “Technology of metals and foundry production” was separated from the department “Metallurgy of ferrous metals” (since 1976 – the department “Foundry production”), which was headed by Kostin AV (1968-1973), Shneiderman M.E. (1973-1976), Pinchuk, E.I. (1976-1983), Shugol B.M. (1984-1992), Kimanov B.M. (1992-1996).

In 1981, in the factory of the higher educational technical university a department was established “Technology of Metals and Materials Engineering”, which in 1989 was renamed to the Department of “Metallurgy and Metal Physics”. Over the years, the department was headed by Zhukushev Sh.M. (1981-1982), Kanaev A.T. (1982-1985) Nechaev Yu.S. (1985-1992).

In 1997, the department was renamed the department “Metal science, metal physics and foundry production”. Head of the newly formed department in 1997-1999 became Ph.D., Musin D.K. From 1999-2005 the department was headed by Ph.D., associate professor Boranbayeva B.M.

In 2005 the Department of Metallography, Metal Physics and Foundry Production was transformed into the Department of Materials Science and Technology of New Materials, which was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Reshotkina E.N. (2005-2007) and Doctor of Technical Sciences, Nurumgaliev A.Kh. (2007–2009).

In September 2009, the department “Metallurgy” and “Materials Science and Technology of New Materials” were merged. At their base, a department of “Metallurgy and Materials Science”, which is currently headed by Asylbek Habadashevich Nurumgaliev, is currently headed.
