In 2014, the governments of Great Britain and Kazakhstan launched a joint partnership program “Newton-Al-Farabi” for a period of five years with a total budget of 20 million sterling. Parties finance the Program on a parity basis.

The program is carried out within the framework of the activities and at the expense of the Newton Foundation, managed by the Ministry of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the fund’s capital is £ 735 million). Newton’s funding of various programs is part of the UK commitment to official development assistance. Through the work of the Foundation, the United Kingdom will be able to apply its advantages in research and innovation to promote the social and economic development of partner countries.

In the course of working together in the framework of bilateral and multilateral programs, the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan intend to expand and strengthen existing ties and create strong, stable, systematic relations in the field of research and innovation.

The coordinators of the Newton-Al-Farabi Program are JSC Science Foundation, on the part of Kazakhstan, and the British Council, on the part of Great Britain.

Initially, the program will focus on building up scientific potential, exchanging personnel and creating joint research centers. The focus will be on the following six priority areas:

* Power industry;

* Health and well-being;

* Agricultural technology;

* Ability to recover from natural disasters;

* Ecology and environment;

* Food and water.

It is assumed that in the future the Program will increasingly support scientific cooperation between the UK and Kazakhstan in these areas, as well as enhancing the economic and social value of innovation.
