Magnetic materials play a fundamental and important role in virtually all aspects of our daily lives, and many of us remain unaware of the role that these materials play in making our environment safer, cleaner and more energy efficient; as new technology is developed, it quickly becomes the norm.

The drive for increased energy efficiency has become a worldwide target and many projects have the support of individual government funding or, specifically for Europe, EU funding. The use of magnetic materials spans a very wide range of application areas and the seminar will bring together leading speakers from both industry and academia to report on the latest developments and trends in technology.

This seminar will continue the European vein of events the Society has run over the last few years, such as Vacuumschmelze in Hanau, Germany, and Aalborg University in Denmark. Besides the presentations split over two days and the informal dinner, there will be an opportunity for some delegates to visit either Arnold Magnetic Technology’s site at Lupfig, or LCD Lasercut’s facility in Densburen.

Cambridge breaks supercondutivity record

Cambridge engineers have ‘trapped’ a 17.6 T magnetic field inside a golf ball-sized sample of superconducting material. High temperature gadolinium barium copper oxide (GdBCO) is normally as brittle as fine china. The engineers broke a world record that has stood for more than a decade, by 0.4 T.

The research demonstrates the potential of high-temperature superconductors for applications in a range of fields, including flywheels for energy storage, ‘magnetic separators’, which can be used in mineral refinement and pollution control, and in high-speed levitating monorail trains.

28th Ewing Event: Cars — The Electric Future

16 December 2014, Castle Bromwich, UK

The 28th Ewing Event will look to current best-in-class systems and explore the future of the electric / hybrid vehicle, what it might look like, what power source it may use, etc. As a leading vehicle designer and producer of vehicles in the UK, Jaguar Land Rover are extremely well placed to comment.

The lecture programme will include speakers from several organisations, including Mike Richardson, Jaguar Land Rover’sChief Technical Specialist Hybrids and Electrification, who’s responsible for research and advanced engineering activities pertinent to electric and hybrid vehicles.

The Ewing Lecture will be held at Jaguar Land Rover’s site at Castle Bromwich. Tours of the plant will be available.

The following Ewing Dinner, a reception and semi-formal dinner, will be held in a nearby hotel.
